Did you know that there is a Buddhist Hell? I’m betting most people would say no. I had no idea before coming to Thailand.
Thailand has a ridiculous number of temples. Most very grand and incredibly beautiful, some small and slightly more modest. There are a few that have an interesting feature in their grounds….a very dark and disturbing depiction of Buddhist Hell. There is one temple, with a Buddhist Hell garden, on the way to Pattaya. It’s called Wang Saen Suk Hell Garden, and it’s like Disneyland gone wrong. Honestly, it’s a little horrifying!
Each statue shows what will happen to you if you have committed any number of atrocities (ever been rude to your teachers or parents, had an alcoholic drink, been ungrateful or jealous? – well, welcome to your future!).
The garden is a very unusual place. I wouldn’t say it’s worth a trip specifically to see it, but definitely good as an odd little stop on the way to Pattaya (some people’s own idea of Hell).
